Sutton Theatres History

The red brick building of The Secombe is situated on the corner of Cheam Road and Gibson Road and dates from 1937. Originally used as a church, in 1984 it was converted into The Secombe Theatre, named after the famous comedian Sir Harry Secombe. It also marks the start of theatre provision in the area. The Theatres Trust website describes the current building as “a commanding presence in the landscape”.

Previously a public hall, roller skating rink and a cinema, The Cryer theatre designed by renowned architects Cullinan Studio, was named after the man who led the campaign to open The Secombe Theatre. The Cryer theatre was opened by His Royal Highness Prince Edward in 1991. Cullinan Studios describes The Cryer theatres’ functionality as an original building that was extensively remodelled to create a space that is light, open and versatile space with excellent acoustics. Behind The Cryer, Sutton Theatres are running a recording studio currently occupied by Crunch Studios and a scenic workshop occupied by leading scenic painters, DAP Studio.
