“Outstanding!”
-Nell Leyshon (Evening Standard Award Dramatist)

How do you handle your 8.45 when your man is fighting the Taleban on breakfast news? Can six months respite from shaving your legs ever compensate for half a year spooning a hot water bottle?
All these things Jo finds out when her soldier boyfriend deploys. But while Jo’s man dodges the IEDs, she is left to deal with her own unexploded device: her future mother in law!
Written by the wife of a serving soldier and conceived from indiscreet interviews with military wives, Jo’s War reveals the domestic dramas behind frontline tours and holds more twists and surprises than an Afghan A road.

by Ruth Katerelos

Rude Bookings and WishinWell Productions present the London premiere of Ruth Katerelos in What's Love Got To Do With IT? with Monique Kenny on guitar.

In her cabaret debut, Australian actor/singer/songwriter/filmmaker and producer Ruth Katerelos explores the power of love (and fear), leading her audience on a musical journey through various states of love; lost love, unrequited love, love of humanity, falling in love when you're already involved …. and much more.

Katerelos' "crystalline voice" expresses every emotional nuance of her stylistically diverse original songs, which are woven together with personal stories and observations of life, love and the whole damn thing, with humour and pathos. Ruth presents a memorable night of cabaret, beautifully supported by the dulcet tones of Monique Kenny on guitar.

Mr Susan's 'Cheeky Flippin' Nice'
On from 18 May 2012 to 18 May 2012
Hen and Chickens
by Mark Davison

Mr Susan's 'Cheeky Flippin' Nice'

Mr Susan is an alien who has no idea about anything. He came to Earth "half past 10 year ago", trying to get a job in Woolworths. He failed and is stuck here now, but Cheeky Flippin' Nice keeps him going.

Mark Davison (BBC3's Feed My Funny, C4's The Dr Brown Show) brings character stand-up that weaves a story, and a game show, into the comedy. 'Good timing, a strong sense of what makes people laugh and great commitment to a character. The enduring impression being that we are watching an accomplished professional.

A very talented performer' (FringeReport.com).

Jacob Edwards vs. Catriona Knox (Work in Progress)
On from 28 May 2012 to 28 May 2012
Hen and Chickens
by Jacob Edwards, Catriona Knox

Jacob Edwards vs. Catriona Knox (Work in Progress)

Jacob Edwards and Catriona Knox were separated at birth, born to simple circus folk who sold them to two different wealthy families – Catriona was exchanged for stocks and shares in Dyson vacuum cleaners, now seen as a shrewd move, Jacob was swapped for a bag of footballs.

The pair were only reunited by chance when they were both cast in the 1988 smash-hit movie ‘Twins’, ironically a film about twins separated at birth. It was in wardrobe when they compared matching the matching tattoos of Gerry Cottle on their lower backs, they suspected they might be related.

On Sunday 6th March the pair will come together again for the first time since filming to perform the entire story once more, this time live on stage.

This one-off performance of ‘Twins – Live!’ will take place @ The Hen & Chickens, Islington at 7.30pm, with Jacob reprising his role as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Catriona as Danny DeVito.

Given the scale of the production, rehearsals will take place up to the very last moment. If Catriona and Jacob feel that they’ve been unable to do the script justice, then instead they’ll be performing new characters, sketches and other fun material for your entertainment. It’ll be epic either way, so please do come along!

Cat Commander is; Falling

Cat Commander is drinking her way through the last memories that are left in the liquor cabinet, telling a love story sung in the key of heartbreak in this confessional character-based cabaret, switching seamlessly from the comedic to the poignant. Raw, honest and highly alcoholic.

'There is a beautiful combination of skill and raw talent on stage, using simple props to convey character...unafraid to deal with intimate topics. Cat Commander might be falling, but it's a wonderful ride on the way down' – AustralianStage.com

Backseat Hero
On from 08 Jun 2012 to 08 Jul 2012
Hen and Chickens
by Luke Benson

Two-time comedian of the year nominee, Luke Benson previews his debut stand-up show Backseat Hero.

Luke Benson is a rubbish hero. There’s a lot against him being a good one: Unfortunately, his home planet has not been destroyed by a death ray, although Margaret Thatcher gave it a good go…and he’s only being hotly pursued by a taxi driver gone mad.

See an all action, all riotous story of stalking unravel… Luke’s account of an accident with a bike, a taxi and an unnamed car sets the wheels in motion for a highly energetic, entertaining tale.

This is a David and Goliath story – but this time Goliath is the hero/bit of a bell-end!

Geordie giant, Luke Benson is an incredibly talented stand-up comedian, making waves on the circuit since 2007. He has been a finalist in the Hackney Empire, Amused Moose, Leicester Square Theatre and Mirth Control competitions. He was also nominated for the Leicester Mercury New Comedian of the Year Award.

"Confident and assured and had some great punchlines." Fringe Guru

“A quirky observational set that earns him lots of applause…He looks the part, he’s got the talent, and it’s easy to imagine him on the telly” Sunday Times

“One of the most instantly likeable personalities on the line-up. His punch-lines hit the targets... even more impressive was how he found a clear voice whatever style or subject of comedy he tackled.” The Stage

Hen and Chickens
by Hanks and Conran

Following their appearances at the Brighton and Leicester Comedy Festivals, female double act Hanks and Conran are delighted to announce their Edinburgh Fringe debut with their new show ‘Pigs In Blankets’.

What really goes on behind closed doors? Pigs In Blankets looks at the relationship and chemistry on stage, and off, between Susan (Hanks) and Lou (Conran). When one half never finishes and the other half barely starts, is it ever possible to achieve their quest, of forming the ultimate comedy duo?

During the show, we discover Susan’s childhood obsession with a popular 1980’s comedian. Lou endeavours to surprise Susan by inviting said comedian to join their show, which falls short of disappointing, and leads to a special guest appearance, of a sort. Almost an hour of stand- up comedy, this is Hanks and Conran doing what they do best. Bantering, bickering, and beguiling, this show promises to leave you as happy as a pig in…..well, a blanket.

Welcome to Jenny Eclair’s new stand-up show. After thirty years in the business she should vaguely know what she’s doing? Professional Grumpy Old Woman, writer and panto star; Eclair has been round the block that many times she’s lost count.

You may recognise her from Loose Women where she is happy to be one of ‘The Coven’. She is also a Pilates Ninja and a disgrace in her own kitchen.

Touring as a stand-up gives Eclair enormous pleasure. It also gives her dreadful varicose veins, but most importantly it gives her partner (St Geof) a bit of a break.

Forget about boring marches: Chris teaches us how to make a protest joyful.

Expect the the same show as in Edinburgh but with festive aggression and possibly a Santa Hat.

Amadeus Martin Is Keeping It Surreal
Award-winning comedian and Paramount Comedy Best New Act finalist Amadeus Martin returns following last year’s riotous rave reviews with more farce-paced storytelling and observations.

Amadeus also brings his badly drawn pictures and presents not-to-scale graphs and charts for those finicky analysts i.e. ‘Spannalysts’ who prefer reasoning rather than relying on emotional responses, even though the data is mostly made up.

He likes Muttley and hates Lassie.

Fresh Off the Boat: An evening of 2 one-act plays about Immigration
On from 08 Oct 2013 to 12 Oct 2013
Hen and Chickens
by By Paradigm Theatre

Fresh Off the Boat takes a look at immigration in the UK through the eyes of two playwrights and two directors. With immigration rules changing on almost a daily basis, racist vans circling North London, and the current government debating Britain's involvement in the European Union, we though it was the perfect time to explore immigration and provide a platform for our own Artistic Director, who has recently returned to the UK following her own immigration nightmare. The plays are as follows--

A Border Story
When Brian, who is from the UK, and his American wife are refused their UK marriage visa, they must move to another EU country in order to return to England on a European Economic Area Family Permit. This is a completely autobiographical (and slightly surreal) account of Paradigm's Artistic Directors own visa nightmare.

The Utility People
When middle class liberals Chloe and Jake discover immigrants living in their utility cupboard, they agree to let them stay in return for doing the cleaning, cooking, and so much more. A completely true story (and not-at-all a ham-fisted allegory) from the UK Home Office files.

Who is Mr Kirby?
On from 20 Dec 2013 to 20 Dec 2013
Hen and Chickens
by You are

This hour long show is largely based on audience suggestions and anything else the Kirby team can wrangle out of an audience member!! Aiming to make it as much your show as ours!! Featuring a plethora of doodlings from our Artist in Residence Ben Charman! Comedic life stories from the wonderful world of George Rowe! Beatboxing, noise making and improv musician Joe Charman! All held together by the Kirby glue that is our quick-witted (keeper of sweets) MC/host Mr Chris Gau!

But WHO IS MR KIRBY?... Truth is... we already know... He was a strange guy that used to turn up to our gigs when the show was not very interactive, Mr Kirby took it upon himself to make it very much his show. Shouting out suggestions and generally heckling us, we grew tired of his interruptive ways... until one day Mr Kirby disappeared... Where? Only Mr Kirby knows...

But after a few shows without him we realised the show was not the same without him, we missed that blonde, lank haired, leathery skinned old git... We wanted him back... or at least someone like him...

So that's what the show is all about... finding that one person that gets involved more than anyone else! Our show culminates with the audience voting for a new Mr Kirby, we have a big sing song and shower our new Mr Kirby with cheap home made gifts...

The show ran for 3 weeks at the Edinburgh festival 2013 and plans to return in 2014, with other dates over the country between now and then... so COULD YOU BE MR KIRBY?

Sean Hughes in Penguin
On from 10 Jan 2014 to 11 Jan 2014
Hen and Chickens
by Sean Hughes

“At his funniest and most profound” ***** The Sunday Herald August 2013.

Sean Hughes is back on tour following a critically acclaimed and audience packed run of his new show ‘Penguins’ at The Edinburgh Fringe. Sean was awarded the Herald Angels Award for Best Comedy show.

This is a show so full of surprises, and hidden twists and recurring themes that you find yourself mapping it out hours later. Sean takes us back to his Dublin upbringing and the, at times, utter awkwardness of teenage life Weaving in his family, his school days and the business of friendship and tying it all in to the present.

It’s brilliant and multi-layered –and it really is up there with his Perrier award winning show A One Night Stand. Why does society tell us how to behave and react? What does it have to do with Penguins?

Buy a ticket and all will be revealed.

“For quick laughs look elsewhere, but for something that leaves more of an impression. Hughes is your man “ Chortle **** August 2013

Ed Gamble: Work in Progress

Hen and Chickens

Ed Gamble plods into town to plan what he is going to say in his debut Edinburgh show, with new jokes and stories in a certain order. He has been on Russell Howard's Good News (loads of people have, I know, but he wore a nice shirt for it if that helps), Dave's One Night Stand (his bit only went on the website but he did the gig so that must count for something) and supported Greg Davies on a national tour (they were particularly underwhelmed with him in Bristol.)

He is also in the stupid double act Peacock & Gamble (Chortle Award nominated, BBC Radio 4 Extra) but this show is just him (Gamble).

He would be grateful if you came.

RETOLD

by Goblin Baby Theatre Company

Part of One Hand Applauding Festival 2014

RETOLD

A Fairytale Festival… without the ‘happily ever after’

RETOLD presents darkly comic, thought-provoking, contemporary renditions of three traditional fairytales.

Fairytales have always fascinated us and captivated audiences from young to old. Many themes are far beyond being just children’s stories and often the moral of the story can be quite sinister.

Some fairytales have origins reaching back thousands of years and over time they have constantly been changed and updated, showing how in their very core they deal with fundamental topics and issues of humanity and human nature.

Continuing the practice of adapting fairytales in order to expose and criticise stories of the contemporary world, RETOLD presents new, mature and provocative takes on three of them.

As if by a Stair by Amy Bethan Evans, directed by Tessa Hart.
Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your never-ending list of qualifications and work experience so that I may find it useful to me and rescue you from your childhood bedroom. That’s if I don’t go to one of the thousands of other maidens in your situation first. You get the picture.
- starring Ana Lucia Robleda, Lydia Lane & Andrei Ionescu

The Snow White Complex by Tilly Lunken, directed by Kuba Drewa.
Outside a cinema Rose, Sophie and Lilly wait for the next screening of Snow White. It’s not for a while; they are far too old for this really, and yet here they still are, by the door, clinging onto the twisted dregs of a fairytale.
- starring Chloe Addiscott, Jocasta King & Priscilla Adade-Helledy

Little Red Hoodie by Claire Booker, directed by Bradley Leech & Rebecca Hill.

It’s dark, it stinks and it’s packed with victims. Can Hoodie, Gran and Aisha escape from the Wolf’s dark belly, or should they wait for the Woodcutter?
- starring Natasha Atherton, Rebecca Peyton & Tessa Hart

We usually centre our festivals around one theme. This time, we are basing each play around the same prop – a key. We've got 4 short, dark comedy plays using a key as their essential prop. What does the key open? Or what is it keeping hidden?

We have four short comedy plays from: The Grandees, Eliza Power, Frost & Ireland and Lexy Howe.

Come along and see what the key unlocks...

Hen and Chickens
by Goblin Baby Theatre Co

In response to the legislations allowing same-sex marriage in the UK & alongside the widely discussed discrimination of LGBT people in Russia, we are giving Anton Chekhov's one-act-classic ‘The Proposal' a new twist by turning it into a futuristic farce about same-sex marriage. To complete our comedy-double-bill we will also present a brand new play about same-sex marriage by Tilly Lunken called 'To Be a Wife'.

Anton Chekhov’s freely adapted One-Act-Farce THE PROPOSAL, directed by Joe Allan
Well, in Russia 2114 Ivana has come to propose marriage to Stepan's daughter Natalya. However, she only gets into a succession of pointless arguments with Natalya, involving boundary disputes and dogs. Stepan's contributions to the flow of events are no help to the situation either; nor is Ivana's hypochondria. To make matters even more complicated, Ivana is a woman proposing to another woman!

& Tilly Lunken’s brand new play TO BE A WIFE, directed by Tessa Hart
Well, in England 1814 Iris loves Bel but is married to Roddy.
Then, in 1914 Bel marries Roddy but of course she loves Iris (really and truly)!
And then in 2014, Bel loves Iris and can marry Iris and Iris loves Bel and can marry Bel and neither marries Roddy as he's most emphatically not in want of a wife!

Changing State by New Slang Productions
On from 03 Feb 2015 to 14 Feb 2015
Hen and Chickens
by Tian Glasgow

"One in 10 young British 'have nothing to live for'" – The Guardian, Jan 2014

In an election year the topic of the affect of a recession on youth mental health is at fever pitch. Spiralling unemployment and expensive universities causing a loss of ambition, self-esteem and a decline into depression for predominantly working-class youth.

CHANGING STATE is a darkly comic coming-of-age story set in inner city London. Three of the characters cling to the hope that the uncertainty and confusion of adolescence will clear but having returned from university one of them knows that it is a long road. As they navigate the pitfalls of modern life, they must realise that mistakes big and small are the only way forward.

CHANGING STATE is another stylised performance piece brought to you by New Slang Productions team. Their second full production since Silver Shores (2012) staged in the Tristan Bates Theatre in Covent Garden.

Praise for Silver Shores:

"... a real strength of the writing was character. Each of the four men we encountered was drawn well; I believed in their humanity...this is a well performed, elegant and important show. It will stay in your head like the beat of a drum."
Jessica Edwards – A Younger Theatre"

The ‘Theatre of Heaven and Hell’ explores all aspects of drama from the sublime to the ridiculous, from the romantic to the horrific. ‘THE LESSON’ ticks all these boxes.

A young attractive student arrives for her first lesson. She is desperate to learn, and her tutor desperate to teach her. What is the worst that could happen….. ?

Eugene Ionesco’s radical views on education, life and death are buried deeply in this funny, disturbing and horrific play.
As the maid explains ‘Arithmetic leads to Philology, and Philology leads to Crime’.

Hen and Chickens
by Ian Grant

Who speaks for Europe – hard right, muffled left or…?

A new play for our times by Ian Grant

Nicholas Formio, leader of the British Independence Party, targets the General Election in May 2015. Stella Herbert, professor of philosophy, detests Formio’s far-right politics and his disdain for Europe. Ally Erskine, one of her students, and John Dove, a charismatic poet/lecturer, urge her to stand for Parliament against Formio.

Ally feels demeaned by Stella; Stella does not know she loves John; John (the lover of Lady Mary, Stella’s mother) has social pretensions but no money. Ally sucks John into the worlds of pornography and passport-trafficking. Stella takes on Formio in the May 2015 election campaign.

This is now, this is what is happening in the Spring of 2015. UKIP is gaining momentum, the case for Britain in Europe is on the back foot, where’s the passion?

Flicks at the Chicks: Supernova

Hen and Chickens
by Flicks at the Chicks

Supernova

Meis is sixteen, lives in the back of beyond and aspires to a grand and stirring life, but all that happens is the passing of the time, waiting for the next car to run into the front of the house.

She dreams of a young car driver called “Brad” whom she would like to take care of and maybe have sex with. Dad is waiting for the next driver to bring some heroism to his life again. Mom is waiting for the same moment, so they can permanently move to the city. Ever since dad was the first person that ran into the house, grandma cannot stop shaking. The shaking seems to worsen lately. Meis hopes this is a sign that something is bound to happen.

The whole family is waiting in the bisected room, of which three metres plus a thirty-centimetre safety margin have been declared unfit for habitation by grandpa after the last collision. Grandpa himself fell from the half-completed bridge years ago and drowned. They all wait for the next driver to crash their house.

During one of Meis’ forbidden, dangerous nocturnal visits to the half bridge, deliverance finally arrives. Part of a trunk sticks out from the cloud of dust blowing from the house front. In the car, the solution incarnate lies, all crumpled up. He is about 19 years old and his name could very well be Brad.

Supernova has played at various festivals including Berlin, Chicago and Durban. This is the London premiere of the film.

Naomi Petersen: I Am Telling You I’m Not Going
On from 28 Sep 2015 to 23 Nov 2015
Hen and Chickens
by Naomi Petersen

After recently witnessing a particularly gruelling amateur production of ‘Slaughter In Five Acts’, Rosie has become severely agoraphobic. As a result, she has resorted to living in the venue, now too anxious to leave the room and go back outside. But this is a theatre after all, and as many as twelve people at a time are lining up outside the door, so our unlikely protagonist has no choice but to put on a show for them. Is today the day she’ll finally have the guts to walk out the door?
Written and performed by Naomi Petersen in her debut solo hour, this is a comic play for anyone who enjoys laughing and doesn’t mind watching a woman eat a sandwich onstage.
‘Carrying the show is the extraordinary Naomi Petersen (The Independent)’;
‘Naomi Petersen’s performance is so winning that she immediately gets the audience on side (The Guardian)’;
‘downright hilarious…robust writing and running gags… a short show with a wide appeal, which leaves you feeling uplifted (View From The Gods)’

Monday 1st – Friday 5th Aug 9pm £8.00

Fresh out of Exeter University, Nimble Troop brings you its debut production ‘Shoulder to Shoulder’, an original re-telling of the story of the British suffrage movement through the eyes of five women. Creating an episodic & punchy collage of these women’s lives, Nimble Troop challenges the preconception of a unified movement to give a voice to the women that history does not always relate. This devised piece, inspired by contemporary diary entries, speeches and lyrics from suffrage songs engages the audience through innovative multi-media, soundscaping and movement. ‘Shoulder to Shoulder’ creates a fresh take on a well-known narrative, highlighting that we all have a right to be heard, even though, sometimes, that might be hard to stomach.

This show doesn’t have all the answers (or even some of the answers, if we’re honest) but it does have jokes, stories and patchy stubble.

In a dimly lit back room of Oxford's Eagle and Child pub, two young Oxford graduates share stories of dragons, elves and Norse mythology amidst occasional beer-fuelled banter.

C.S. Lewis, a fresh faced, impressionable yet imaginative young atheist, finds himself conversing with the energetic and highly opinionated new head of English, Professor Tolkien. Before the birth of their imaginative worlds, these two great minds developed a strong and inseparable friendship that was one of the founding and fuelling elements of the birth of Narnia and Middle-Earth.

This UK premiere explores the very beginning of such an unlikely bond between a devout Catholic and an ardent non-believer, and their continued support and love of each other’s work.

This Man Right Here by Rick Lyons
On from 22 Aug 2016 to 25 Aug 2016
Hen and Chickens
by Camden Fringe

Adam is an everyday scoundrel. A man no different to thousands of others except for one thing – he tells us what he really thinks. We hear his justifications for watching porn, his tactics for getting antidepressants from his GP and how he resents his emasculating fiancée Amy. It’s his crush on Amy’s little sister Roman though, that truly steers him into dangerous waters. The younger woman piques his interest when he discovers her ‘sex blog’ and, as he’s drawn towards her, Adam must bring his A-game of avoidance, stalling and deception to stop Amy discovering the kind of person he really is.
This Man Right Here is a dark, funny, relatable new play which asks if ordinary men have an inner-rogue or whether, in fact, it’s best not to look.

Oh P*uck
On from 22 Aug 2016 to 26 Aug 2016
Hen and Chickens
by Camden Fringe

Imagine Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream brought to life with a cast of just one. Sounds crazy? That's the task facing enthusiastic young director Polly. If the magnitude of her job wasn't too much she's also got to contend with Dave, the actor chosen for the piece. Grumpy, jaded and definitely not up for wearing fairy wings and a tutu, Dave can imagine nothing worse than optimistic Polly's whimsical vision for the Dream.

Oh P*ck! is a hilarious original comedy where personalities clash on the journey towards opening night. Will the show go on? Will Polly realise her vision? Will Dave discover his inner mischief before he shoves Polly's fluffy pen somewhere unmentionable? Discover for yourself at the world premiere of Oh P*ck!

The near future: to prepare for imminent alien arrival on Earth, citizens are required to attend today’s workshop. It’s led by astrobiologist Dr Alex Parker and military specialist Captain Reynolds – to Alex, encountering a new life form is an amazing adventure, but to Reynolds, it’s an unspecified threat.

We know nothing about the aliens and all they know about us is the information attached to space probe Voyager on the Golden Record, produced in 1977. Things have changed quite a lot since then....

Reviews of previous productions:

"Fun, goofy and always fascinating" Snipe London
"a lot of research went into this show and it shows....well-written, entertaining and sweet" Londonist

A very physical and silly take on the improv genre. We've composed our own roster of original games, which we play with reckless abandon. It's a bit like, "Whose line is it anyway?", but higher energy and sillier. We are offbeat and friendly, and will leave audiences of all ages full of warm and fuzzy feelings. Belly laughs guaranteed.

Mercy Road

Hen and Chickens
by Camden Fringe

Sharon runs a soup kitchen with Loz, a reformed street walker in Salford.
The work tests their well-honed gallows humour to the max as they deal with the daily attrition of drug addiction, sex working and life on the streets. The darker the events the blacker the comedy.
Sharon, in particular, seems somewhat worn out by it all, but Loz refuses to let her fall into despair

Late one night, a mysterious intruder changes everything…

MERCY ROAD calls on the author's 16 years of working in the field of drug addiction and sex work in Camden to conjure an unflinching story of resilience in the face of adversity.

NOTE: MERCY ROAD contains adult themes and strong language.

As Abeni awakes one morning from restless dreams, she finds herself transformed in her bed into a monstrous, verminous insect-like creature.
This story is based on Frank Kafka's classic but this is a production full of twists, turns, magic, music and a message for us all.
This adaptation, devised and directed by Nick Pelas, relocates events to a Yoruba village in Nigeria and features an all-female cast, though the familiar beats of Kafka's tale remain the same, a very careful, intelligently judged reimagining.

STITCHES by Claire Urwin

Hen and Chickens
by Clarie Urwin

‘It was simple. Some moved up to the Cloud Rafts, some moved out to the Ocean Floats and the rest of us stayed behind to watch the world burn.’

Stitches is a dark, post-apocalyptic play, which explores culture and the human relationship with the environment following a major ecological disaster. A poetic discussion piece which is both entertaining and thought provoking, this inaugural production from new-writing theatre company hairofthedog comes from acclaimed writer Claire Urwin (Winner of the International Student Playscript Competition for How Hard It Happens and ‘one to watch’, The Sunday Times).

Press on previous work by Playwright Claire Urwin:

‘Another imaginative, image-rich creation from Urwin.’ Three Weeks

‘A striking and provocative play.’ Manchester Evening News

Press on previous work by Director Matthew Iliffe:

‘Perfect direction from young Matthew Iliffe.’ BroadwayWorld

‘Every detail is noticed – every note, every line, every expression. Iliffe’s attention to detail is so minute that every possible crease is totally ironed out, showing a very firm hand on the tiller.’ HISKIND Magazine
