Tokens of Affection
by Maureen Lawrence

Persever Productions brings you the London premier of Tokens of Affection by Maureen Lawrence.

This often witty and disarmingly charming play is also a startling theatrical peek into the world of a special teaching unit for the containment of violent or maladjusted girls in Bradford in the nineteen-eighties.

Seen through the eyes of a recently qualified social care professional, the day centre is a place of chaos and struggle with no real sense of what it is trying to achieve, apart from keeping the girls off the streets. But it is also a place of high energy and laughter, small glimmers of hope come from the humour and wit intrinsic in the plays’ younger characters as, even though almost broken by circumstances, their resilience is astounding. The small tokens of affection can be found in the very human interactions between these disturbed children and their over-worked and under-supported carers.

This ‘lost’ work by Maureen Lawrence, playwright, author, and former Derby Playhouse writer in residence, has not been produced since its original production at Derby Playhouse in 1990.

Reviews of original 1990 production
“Perhaps the most shocking thing about the […] production is that it is so savagely entertaining.”
Tim Brown

“There are rare theatrical occasions of such complete absorption that the outside world does not exist.”
On Stage

“what fills the evening is the varied behaviour of children and staff. There is affection hidden in the approaches both of girls and staff…” B A Young Financial Times

‘At 30, every innocent flirtation becomes a prospect for a shared mortgage application’.

Before 30 follows Chris, a Deliveroo driver trying to make his way in the world. His previous struggles with depression and anxiety resurface as he faces the
prospect of turning 30, comparing himself to his Grandad who seemingly achieved life’s milestones so easily. A mortgage, a career, a family, where should we be at 30?

This true to home one man show tells an honest story about mental health that any age can relate to. Combining surreal comedy with dramatic spoken work and told across 12 chapters, one for each month in the countdown to 30, transporting the audience from the tent that Chris rents in London to the top of Everest on a quest for purpose..

The Lady of the Camellias
Adapted by Cloud Downey and Jo Dalton
From the Novel ‘La Dame Aux Camlies’
by Alexandra Duma fils

The famous story of Parisian courtesan, Marguerite Gautier, known as the Lady of the Camellias because of her fondness for that flower, was first given as a theatrical performance in Paris in the 1890s, starring the legendary Sarah Barnhardt.
It was famously filmed by MGM in 1936 as ‘Camille ’with Greta Garbo in the title role.
The Verdi opera ‘La Traviata’ is based on the same story.

Nimbus Theatre is proud to present this new adaptation of the romantic tale of beautiful professional seductress, Marguerite, who gives up her life of wealth and glamour for a love that ends in tragedy. Set in Paris in the 1850s the play is presented in period costume.
