About Greenwich Theatre

Greenwich Theatre is a 421 seat mid-scale venue adapted from a Victorian Music Hall. In 1999, Hilary Strong took over the directorship of the theatre, and since then the theatre has forged a commitment to, and a reputation for, high quality accessible theatre for all.

Musical Theatre

In all aspects of both programming and producing Greenwich Theatre is committed to supporting the production of musical theatre, in a cultural climate which increasingly favours commercial recognition over theatrical innovation, and the theatrical presentation of established popular music over wholly original musical theatre. With its thrust stage and intimate auditorium, Greenwich Theatre is ideally suited to the presentation of musical theatre – one of this country's most valuable cultural exports. The annual festival Musical Futures provides a unique opportunity for new writers and composers to showcase their new work in front of an audience of invited industry professionals and public musical theatre lovers alike. Its partner two-week festival, Musical Voices, brings some of the best international musical theatre performers to Greenwich, and played host to the first ever London Cabaret Convention.

Theatre Education

Greenwich Theatre is committed to providing a nationally unique programme of educational opportunities for young people, primarily through the operation of the Greenwich Musical Theatre Academy. This unique initiative, run through a dynamic partnership of arts and educational organisations, works with hundreds of young people throughout the year, free of charge, and enables young people to engage with all aspects of theatre production. The performers of tomorrow are the students of today, and Greenwich Theatre strives to ensure that those students are provided with the best training available and are drawn from all sectors of the community.

Access And Opportunity

Ultimately, theatre holds something for everyone, and Greenwich Theatre is committed to promoting equality of opportunity across all aspects of its operation. This applies to audiences, performers, practitioners and young participants alike. For musical theatre writers we strive to offer developmental opportunities unavailable elsewhere. In education, we strive to offer unique opportunities to young people otherwise excluded from the industry by high tuition costs or low self-esteem. In programming, we offer a broad, diverse selection of productions, denying the narrow elitism perceived in much theatre. In welcoming audiences, we strive to offer accessible facilities, performances and activities throughout the year, and are ready to talk to our audience at any time to improve our service.

Greenwich Theatre exists to provide opportunities:

- the opportunity to see a high quality piece of theatre at a price you can afford

- the opportunity to learn to perform, despite an inability to pay for tuition

- the opportunity to see your work performed in front of an audience

- the opportunity to access theatre in a new way

...and for us, the opportunity to bring the joy of theatre to a new audience, night after night after night.
