About King's Head Theatre

The King's Head Theatre is a maverick among theatres. A 107 seater theatre situated in Islington's historic, 19th century King's Head pub, the theatre was founded in 1970 by Dan Crawford. Widely regarded, by critics and audiences alike, as one of London's premiere fringe venues – a performance space which fosters a distinctive intimacy between audience and performer. The King's Head Theatre is one of a small handful of fringe venues whose work is constantly of a high standard, resulting in a fervently loyal audience of significant size, drawn London-wide as well as from within the local borough of Islington.

In 2010, under the artistic leadership of Adam Spreadbury-Maher with resident company OperaUpClose, it became the full-time producing fringe opera house which was branded as “London's Little Opera House at King’s Head Theatre”.

Every month the King's Head Theatre will produce three world premieres by emerging playwrights. In the 1960s, The Royal Court presented a series of plays on Sunday nights, without sets, creating a playwright's first public platform. From there they went on to become the greatest dramatists in history.

We continue this tradition at the King's Head Theatre. The plays will be shown in their entirety, allowing an audience to experience the play at its truest and most vulnerable, to assess the complete journey of a play rather than a section or scene, in a fully staged production, rehearsed full-time for two weeks, with actors off-book but without full sets or costumes. Here, the writing, direction and acting will tell the story. The plays will be presented over three weeks, each play taking consecutive Sunday, Monday and Tuesday evenings. The week between each performance allows the playwright and director to develop the play further, learning from the rehearsals, audiences and peer feedback.

The King's Head Theatre is demonstrating to London a real alternative to the development of new playwrights – rather than extended workshop processes, writers will see their plays performed in full, with a valuable opportunity for audiences to respond and feed back. It is our belief that the best way for a playwright to develop is to be produced.

Forget glamorous sets and technical wizardry- this is about propelling to centre stage the voices of thirty-three new plays and writers each year. Without Decor is highly beneficial to emerging playwrights, directors and producers and its an exciting opportunity to circulate with professionals in the industry. Come and meet the Without Décor team of literary assosiates and Producers if you are keen to be involved.
