About Arcola Theatre

Founded in 2000 by Artistic Director Mehmet Ergen and Executive Producer Leyla Nazli, Arcola Theatre is now one of the most respected arts venues in the UK – blazing a trail in artistic excellence since day-one. Now located at Dalston Junction, it is housed in a converted paint factory and is a favourite of established theatre literati as well as young, upwardly mobile innovators.

Arcola has become well known for the variety of its programming– from new writing to classic drama, music and comedy. Arcola Theatre aims to consistently create and present theatre of a high quality with a social and political relevance not only to a wider audience but also to the multi-cultural local community.

The theatre’s in-house productions are complemented by groundbreaking work in Studio 2 from some of the most exciting young companies in the world. Arcola is much more than an arts venue and runs one of the most extensive multi-cultural community and youth programmes in East London.

Pay What You Can Tuesdays, available for all shows, are for those who find the regular price of theatre tickets off-putting. They are particularly popular with Arcola’s regular local audience as well as students.

Press about Arcola Theatre

'A timely reminder of the artistically engaged ethic that has underpinned the Arcola’s astonishing achievement over the past decade.' – Lucy Powell, Time Out 2010

‘Arcola Theatre brings the very best of the worlds performing and visual arts to the people of the world living and working in London’ – The Guardian

'…a hotbed of new talent' – Charlotte Cripps, The Independent

'The excellent Arcola theatre proves its worth yet again' – Lyn Gardner, The Guardian

'…there's a palpable sense that something important is happening here.' – The Independent

'Mehmet Ergen could already give master classes in ambitious programming and inventive use of theatrical space. Capable Michael Attenborough, newly anointed artistic director of the Almeida, down the road from Dalston, might take a look. The RSC should certainly ponder the audience 'access' that can be achieved on a shoestring.' – Susannah Clapp, The Observer
