About Rose Playhouse Bankside

Built in 1587 by Philip Henslowe, the Rose was the first theatre on Bankside. It was at the height of its commercial success in the 1590s, with a repertory that included plays by William Shakespeare (Titus Andronicus, Henry VI partI), Christopher Marlowe (Doctor Faustus, The Jew of Malta, Tamburlaine) and Thomas Kyd (The Spanish Tragedy).

Its remains were partially uncovered in 1989 by The Museum of London archaeologists. The discovery of the Rose revolutionised our knowledge of how Shakespearian playhouses were built and used. A registered charity, The Rose Theatre Trust was established to protect the site and to forward its full excavation and permanent public display.

Performances at the Rose are helping to raise awareness of the site. It is open every Saturday 10 am to 5 pm by volunteers who show a short film and explain the exciting Rose Revealed Project, which will ensure the site's future. It will be fully dug and displayed creating a visitor centre and performance space.
